CHECK THIS OUT!!!

Those living in the Long Island, NY area will gather at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 449 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY, on Saturday, November 21st at 8:00 p.m. to pay special tribute to Palma Pascale, "In Her Own Words." http://www.palmapascale.com

Performing during this evening will be the incomparable Frank Rendo, along with Laurie Mangano, Al Barbarino, Patricia DiLorenzo, Bobbie Ruth Levy, and Jackie Carey. There may even be a few surprises for those in attendance. (pictured: Laurie Mangano and Frank Rendo)

As you know, Palma Pascale was a prolific song-writer, producer, arranger, singer and award winning recording artist. Sadly, Palma passed from this life on September 8, 2009. We all miss her dearly....this tribute will certainly be one grand way for those in attendance to convey sentiments about Palma, and to reflect on her very own words - the lyrics to some of the beautiful compositions Palma had penned during her lifetime.

I recall asking Palm how she did it - how it happened that she could write so many beautiful, sometimes haunting songs. I mean, she not only wrote those
gorgeous contemporary Christian songs like those she recorded on THE BROKEN CUP, on her new worship CD called I WORSHIP YOU, and her latest Christian effort, THIS MUST BE HEAVEN, (which will BOTH be premiered on this evening); she also wrote some fantastic pop songs with well over 150 in her catalogue, PLUS, she wrote songs for TWO complete Broadway Musicals. (Read more detail in the blogs, below).

So, how did she do it? This always blew me away - but every time I asked her, I always got the same answer: "I generally get inspiration only when I sit at the piano, put my hands on a chord, and start allowing words and music to flow by free association. It is important to let every line advance the message in the lyrics, and to keep them relevant to the listener. Lyrics that are too personal might mean a listener could not relate, so being clear, and true to the "feelings" of the experience I was describing was important. " (pictured: Tim San Paolo & Palma Pascale)

So now we know the "how" of her songwriting, but just how long did it take her to write a complete song? "Most songs take about 45 minutes to write, because they come so spontaneously. If a song takes much longer than about 90 minutes, I put it aside and look at it another time."

Next, I would ask her to give me more specifics about the lyrics - did they come from your very own personal experiences, or did you just make them up as you went along? Here was her response: "It seems to me that all writers write partly from their own experience in love and life, and partly by filling in or altering the "real life" part with imagination, wishful better endings, or things for better dramatic impact. Part of the truth is, we are letting you see some pretty deep things about us, but in such a way that you can't hurt us or judge us, since we can have the veil of "art" for protection. After all, we can always say we "made it up" or "no, that wasn't about YOU," or "no, that wasn't about ME" or "I READ it somewhere!" The truth, if we are vulnerable in our songs, perhaps our listeners won't feel so alone in THEIR thoughts, their sadness, their insecurity or their failed love affair, and disappointment in life. Isn't that what it's all about? Sharing ourselves with others to be a voice in the darkness, telling the listener, "It's okay. I have felt exactly that. And I survived - you will, too. I'm taking the walk with you." (pictured: Palma Pascale)

And that, my friends, is how she did it. So as you listen on this most special night to this tribute to Palma "In Her Own Words" you can have this message tucked into the back of your mind, because now you know how the magic actually happened!
